Creating A Textured Finish With Chalk Paint

Say hello to our newest piece form Rehab 2 Fab Designs, The Atlantis Mystique. This antique chest has beautiful details reminiscent of the beauty and time of Atlantis and the colors embody those of only the deepest of the ocean blues.

We picked this piece up from Marketplace on Facebook and boy had she seen better days. With lots of scratches and gauges and some loose and broken veneer, she had to have some repairs before we could even begin the design process. But look at those bones! So much potential!

We like to use our favorite wood filler, Pro Finishers Wood Filler for all repairs where we need to fill holes, scratches, gauges, etc. When small areas of veneer are loose but still in good condition, we are able to reglue these pieces down using Titebond wood glue. When it’s beyond salvaging, we removed it and fill the areas with our wood filler. Once all the repairs are made, the piece gets a good scrubbing using TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) to remove all dirt and debris. * It is important to wash and TSP residue from your piece prior to painting. The goal is to clean the piece and then remove the cleaning solution. You should keep washing and rinsing with warm water until the water runs clear.

After repairs and cleaning have been completed, we primed the piece using Bin Zinsser oil based primer. This is our go to primer to prevent bleed through from tanins and also block any smells that are common in older pieces. You know the one’s I’m talking about it… they’re not very pleasant are they? 🤢

We recently became a content creator for Dixie Belle Paint Company and chose to use all Dixie Belle products on this piece. Because I love all colors jewel tones… I chose to go with blues/teals on it. I picked 4 colors for this piece; Antebellum Blue (the prettiest teal there is!), Vintage Duck Egg, Manatee Gray and Drop Cloth.

I knew I wanted this piece to have a grunge vibe to it so I decided to add a little texture using Dixie Belle Sea Spray. We mixed this with our Drop Cloth paint color to a brownie like consistency and began dabbing it randomly all over the piece. It’s so easy, even my little boy helped with this part. Once we had our texture in place and allowed it to dry (it’s super fast, don’t worry), I began applying the paint from the darkest colors at the bottom and working my way up the sides to the lightest color. I used blending and drip techniques and a sponge to create more texture with the paint itself. The result is a beautiful grunge, textured vibe that I was hoping to achieve.
