Creating A Beautiful Finish With Dixie Belle Silk Paint

Today, I’m going to share with you an exciting new product from Dixie Belle Paint Company that is sure to make your refinishing life much easier. Dixie Belle recently came out with a new line of paint, Silk All In One Mineral Paint. The best part, it has a built in primer, stain blocker and topcoat. I personally love it for it’s smooth, streak free finish. For this project, I used Hampton Olive on a headboard that we converted into a bench. Here’s what we started with…

We started by building a frame for this piece. For that, we used 1×8 pine boards to create the box for the seat. We had a pair of cabriole legs that we salvaged and saved (who said hoarding is bad? 😉) from an old chair. We used these to put feet on the front of the bench.

We started by giving the piece a good scuff sanding with our SurfPrep sanding system. Next, it was cleaned with Dixie Belle’s White Lightening cleaner. Once we had a nice clean piece, it was time for the fun part… Paint! I chose Dixie Belle’s new Silk line of paint because as I mentioned before, I love the smooth, flawless look it provides with a matte finish. And bonus… no primer or topcoat needed! 🙌

But before that… I wanted to dress it up just a bit. I used a flexible trim that I ordered off of Amazon a few years ago. It’s from FlexibleMillwork.com I applied it along the base of the seat frame, across the back of the seat and down the legs. It was just what this piece needed to give it that extra flair.

I chose Hampton Olive for this piece because I knew after the salvaged legs were stripped and sanded down that I wanted something that would compliment their natural color. I also have been secretly wanting to do an olive green piece for ages! This was the perfect piece in my opinion. With the Silk line, you’ll want to apply it using a dry synthetic brush. I applied 2 coats total for good coverage. Because the bee Silk Paint is an All In One Paint, there is no need to prime unless you feel necessary because your existing finish is super slick. In that case, I’d recommend using Slick Stick or Boss primer. With chalk paints, I sand in between coats of paint but with Silk, I haven’t had to do this. Also, because if the built in topcoat, there is no need for a clear coat.

Once I finished painting the piece, I used Dixie Belle Gilding Wax in Gold to really make that trim pop and also coordinate beautifully with the Hampton Olive green.

While I was doing this, the hubby was building the seat. For it, we used 2×10’s. They were stained in Varathane Golden Oak and sealed in Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat.

Here it is all staged and looking fabulous!
