Designer Hallway Makeover On A Budget

We were approached by a good friend of mine who I know from the nursing world to help makeover a home. She has recently expanded her craft to include purchasing homes for long and short term rental. She got her hands on the two cutest cottage style houses in the North Georgia mountains and wanted some help renovating them. They did all the demo work themselves and asked me to come in to help design the space for a new, updated look. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity because y’all know I love me some good before and afters and I live for DIY projects. I was given a budget and leeway as to what I wanted to do with the first cottage that they were starting on. Talk about a dream come true! My mind quickly raced with ideas and possibilities. When I saw the cottage, I fell in love. Like for reals. Like I want to live there it is so cute! So I decided I would design the house as if I lived there myself. After all, I have good taste (that’s why she picked me for the project wink).

Like most cottage style houses, this one is a general square shape with the living room, dining and kitchen all open on one side and bedrooms on the other. There is a short hallway that connects the living room to the two downstairs bedrooms and when we arrived, it was so dark and dreary with a darker beige/tan shade of paint. But I could immediately see the potential. The interior doors were all original to the house and boasted the panel insets and gold and glass knob door handles found in older homes. Love! I knew that this tiny hallway could be so open, fresh and inviting once lightened up and given a little character that it was so deserving of.

We started by filling all the dings and dents in the walls with our wood putty. There was one rather large hole in the wall above the entrance to the hallway that required a drywall patch. The repair was super easy to do with the right product. You can see a video of how we did the repair here on our YouTube channel.
Next, I lightly sanded the walls to remove any lumps and bumps. Once clean, we painted the walls in a fresh coat of Drift of Mist by Sherwin Williams. The trim was given a refresh with SW’s Extra White to make it pop.

Next, we decided to add some custom board and batten style trim to the walls. This helped add a little height to the space by drawing the eye in an upward direction. We also added wallpaper above the board and batten for the same reason… visual interest and height. The result was amazing! The simple, small hallway went from small, cramped, dark and dreary to bright, light, airy and stylish. You can find out how we did it all by watching my YouTube video here. Happy DIY’ing!
